Add a WWI image form the Western Front to your WIKI page and write a paragraph about what you learned about trench warfare and the nature of WWI form these excercises

The prominence of trench warfare led to many tragedies throughout WWI. Through acting as one of the leaders in the simulation I learned how much is it stake with each decision made by the leader. Although all the fighters were brave and valiant the leaders often lacked the knowledge required to make such crucial decisions. The ignorance of the commanders led to irrational decisions that caused the troops to be put in vulnerable positions in which their chance of success was very low.

a) post an image representing Social Darwinism
b) DEFINE social darwinism as put forward by Spencer
c) WRITE A PARAGRAPH analyzing whether President Obama is accurate in calling Republicans who want to slash social programs "Social Darwinism" Why or why not?

Social Darwinism- A sociological concept which indicates that certain people and groups can have an advantage over others in terms of social standing through their superiority in things such as wealth, surroundings, heredity, and physical attributes.
People are often oblivious to the problems of their peers, as they are being blinded by their own greed, especially in terms of wealth.

President Obama is accurate in describing some republicans who want to cut programs such as medicare and social security as Social Darwinists. By cutting these programs the republicans would be favoring wealthy individuals who do not have to rely on medicare and social security when they are older. The supporters of this policy are, much like the man in the picture, being influenced by their own desire for wealth to disregard the needy. The tax cuts for the rich that President George W. Bush signed will expire by the end of this year, and republicans are pushing for President Obama to reinstitute these tax cuts. Therefore, these republicans want to balance the terrible deficit our country is facing on the backs of those who cannot afford to do so. This system proves to be a perfect example of social Darwinism as it clearly favors the rich and those of a high social standing.

Use the Bono interview and the NYT article below to write a FULL paragraph analyzing the question: Is Western AID curing Africa or killing it? Be sure to include atleast TWO references from EACH source in your analysis.
Although Western aid is helping Africa, what we are doing to help is not enough to cure Africa. According to Bono, if more vaccines were brought to Africa, it would lead to a significant decrease in curable deaths. Although vaccines have been given to Africa, they are given at a quantity that does not do justice to the amount of people that need help. 6,500 Africans die from AIDS each day, and in order to cure Africa Western aid must account for everyone of them. Many, such as Dambisa Moyo, argue that Africans will never be able to become a thriving country if they are so dependent on aid. What they do not realize is that Western Aid is not designed to directly make Africa a thriving country, it is designed to get Africa off on the right foot, to give THEM the opportunity to build a thriving country.

Afghanistan is a mountainous, landlocked, Middle Eastern country. Despite its rugged terrain, Afghanistan is an ideal location that has drawn envy from its surrounding countries. Afghanistan is sandwiched between the Middle East, Central Asia and the India, and is located along the Silk Road. Like most Middle Eastern countries, Afghanistan is Muslim. Islam is a religion predicated around peace, but a group of Muslim extremists have a different portrayal, one that induces violence which would later cause great harm to Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has experienced a period of chaos recently, which is likely due to the corrupt government, starting with the Taliban Administration. During their reign, the Taliban Administration ruled over 90% of Afghanistan. However, the Taliban was not just corrupt towards their home country, Afghanistan, and due to this Afghanistan was often the target of revolts against the Taliban. The attacks Afghanistan has been the target of have led to extreme instability and conflict. Due to the recent instability and conflict, the economy and infrastructure have been left in ruins. Afghanistan has never been able to recover their economy and infrastructure. Their lack of economic and infrastructural prowess is the main reason that Afghanistan is considered a Bottom Line Country.

Although Afghanistan's infrastructure and government are in ruins, there is hope for this country to break out of its current state of instability. Ironically, this hope comes from the thing that could have been the reason that Afghanistan is in shambles. It comes from their strategic location which is, "sandwiched between the Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent along the ancient Silk Route." Afghanistan's location induces envy from its surrounding countries, as it can open up a lot of trading opportunities if utilized effectively. Due to the instability of its government and infrastructure, Afghanistan has yet to take advantage of this asset, but if Afghanistan can get its act together their future looks very promising.

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts, but it was not until over 50 years later when he made his biggest imprints on society. During his lifetime, Franklin excelled in; writing, politics, music, inventing, innovating, science, and math. This remarkable skill set allowed him to make a string of accomplishments that is second to none in terms of the impact he had on peoples lives. Perhaps his most significant accomplishments was earning the status of one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Who knows where we would be today if it were not for Franklin and his political and scientific expertise. My guess is that the America's national reputation as a country known for its equality and fairness, while still dominating on the economic front would be severely hindered had it not been for Franklin, as he laid the groundwork for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. His significant influence on American society, has allowed him to continue to be honored today although he has been dead for over 200 years. Franklin's legacy has been solidified through the countless things he has inspired and been named after, Franklin is honored through coinage, money, cities, companies, educational institution, and multiple cultural references that are prominent in today's society.
Nelson Mandela has had a similar impact on South Africa that Benjamin Franklin had on the United States. Prior to becoming President, South Africa was not a well managed country. South Africa was a country of chaos as there were many revolts, due to the Apartheid. The Apartheid was a governmental system of segregation and discrimination on grounds of race, and led an anti-Apartheid revolt that ultimately led to his imprisonment. After his long imprisonment, he introduced a multi-racial democracy and ultimately became president. When he installed this new form of government, it led to the elimination of inequality in South Africa. The elimination of inequality led to stability, that gave Mandela the opportunity to develop a thriving economy. Before long, South Africa became the center of economy in Africa and was considered a great model for instituting equality. This transformation was due to a series of very successful innovations led by Mandela. Much like Franklin, Mandela is still a national icon despite ending his presidency over ten years ago, and will continue to be honored as he was truly heroic.

If put in the right hands, industrial wealth can serve a moral purpose. When the right person obtains the industrial wealth it can be put to good use and can beneficially impact the aspect of society that the wealth is put towards. However, wealth is not always put in good hands as one could dissipate the money on personal luxuries, rather than on communal beneficiaries. To eliminate the occurrence of industrial wealth being squandered, Andrew Carnegie wrote The Gospel of Wealth. In The Gospel of Wealth, Carnegie described what should be done with Industrial Wealth in order to maximize its beneficiary effects. Carnegie's main pitch to industrial wealth holders was to give it to charities that benefit the public, rather than passing the money on to your family. Friederich Engles also illustrates how greed can result in moral decrepitude in Industrial Manchester. Engels uses Manchester as an example of this common occurrence; as he describes the majority of Manchester consisting of run down housing, while a small portion are living in opulence. If the wealthy had not been so selfish with their money, Manchester would be a much more well rounded society. Both of these stories accentuate the importance of industrial wealth being used to serve a moral purpose insociety.rich-vs-poor.jpg
